What we do

The Friends of Turner’s House organise a programme of Friends Events which take place throughout the year, both locally and further afield. We hold talks and arrange visits to galleries to deepen our understanding of Turner, his times and his art, and there are summer and winter parties as social gatherings where Friends can meet.

The Friends have run art competitions for local schools and colleges; last year fashion design, architecture and product designer students from Richmond College worked on a contemporary design task inspired by and for the house – a response to the work of Turner and his era, interpreted in a contemporary context. We will be continuing with this programme for 2016 – 2017.

Recent activities for the Friends have included a talk by Franny Moyle, author of “The Extraordinary Life and Momentous Times of JMW Turner” and a visit to JMW Turner: Adventures in Colour’ at the Turner Contemporary, Margate.

Forthcoming events include a visit to Turner and the Age of British Watercolour at Petworth House, our 2017 spring lecture by Nicola Moorby and an event celebrating Turner’s birthday in April. We also publish newsletters about our activities and Turner related events and exhibitions.
